About Mexican Gold Coins

Mexico first minted the 50 peso gold coin in 1921, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the country's War of Independence from Spain. Throughout its history, it has been composed of 1.2 ounces of 0.900 fine gold — making it 20% larger than the American Eagle. Though it has a face value of 50 pesos, its actual worth is much higher, and its price is tied to the market value of gold.

Mexican history and myth pervade the gold peso's design. On the obverse is the Monument to Independence, also known as El Ángel, one of Mexico City's most noteworthy landmarks. Behind it can be seen Ixtaccihuatl and Popocatepetl, two mountains which figure prominently in Nahual myth. The country's coat of arms, which depicts an eagle perched on a cactus, devouring a snake — the vision that supposedly led to the founding of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan — features prominently on the coin's reverse.
