Walking Liberty Half Dollar Background

The idea for the Walking Liberty half-dollar came about in 1915 when U.S. Mint Director Robert Wooley began the process of replacing all coinage created by engraver Charles Barber. Working with the United States Commission of Fine Arts, Wooley chose sculptor Adolph Weinman to lead the redesign of the Barber half-dollar and dime.

By the following year, production of the Weinman-designed Walking Liberty half dollar began in the U.S. Mint's Philadelphia facility, expanding to Denver and San Francisco shortly afterwards. Walking Liberty half-dollars remained in production until 1947, though numbers waned in the 20s and 30s. None were minted in 1922 or between 1924-26 and 1930-32.

Design Details

The Walking Liberty half dollar is known for its highly stylized design depicting the full-length figure of Liberty in motion with one arm extended in a welcoming gesture and the other carrying a laurel branch emblematic of victory. The coin's reverse features an equally ornate eagle rising from a mountaintop perch. Weinman’s initials can be seen under the eagle’s tail feathers.

The design won immediate praise from numismatic experts. To this day, it’s well-regarded by collectors and considered one of the most attractive and ambitious ever to appear on U.S. coinage.

Grading and Certification
