First minted in 1921 to honor the Centennial of the successful end of the Mexican War of Independence, the obverse of this gold bullion coin features "El Angel", also known as "The Angel of Independence", with the legendary mountains Ixtaccihuatl and Popocatepetl (named after two star-crossed Indian lovers) in the background. On the reverse is the coat of arms of Mexico, depicted by the Mexican golden eagle devouring a snake, while gracefully perched on a cactus.
