Burnished Gold Eagle coins have a unique appeal among collectors, and it’s no surprise that the burnished Eagle is a popular option in our online store. Burnished coins are minted using a process that provides the sharper strike associated with proof coins, but without the mirror polished finish. They are typically minted in lower volumes than business strike coins, making them rarer and adding to their value and appeal as a collector’s object.

History

Burnished Gold Eagle coins share the same design as other coins in the Gold Eagle Series, which the U.S. Mint first introduced in 1986. The obverse features a variation on the engraving created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the 1907 Double Eagle. Sculptor Miley Busiek designed the reverse, which depicts an eagle in flight holding an olive branch.

The U.S. Mint makes all $50 Gold Eagle coins from 22 Karat (0.9167% pure) gold. As a result, they are worth considerably more than their face value. Other denominations include $25, $10, and $5.

The US Mint produces all Burnished Gold Eagles at its West Point facility. They are identifiable by the presence of the W mint mark on the obverse face. Burnished Eagles designated “Early Release” (ER) or “First Strike” (FS) were minted in the first 30 days of issue, typically resulting in a higher quality strike and crisper details. These are among the most sought-after Gold Eagles on the collectors’ market today.

On this page, you can find our current selection of Gold Eagles for sale. We routinely offer examples in various denominations, from all years of the coin’s production.
