These $1 Indian Princess Type 2 Gold Dollars are Popular Dates with a Mint State grade of MS62 from either PCGS or NGC. Popular Dates for the $1 Indian Type 2 coins range from 1854-1855 struck at the Philadelphia mint. These MS62 coins are excellent examples of their grade with a substantial original mint luster still apparent. The surfaces will have a few small contact marks as well as a couple visible scuff marks and defects on the face. The overall eye appeal is attractive and these are prime examples of uncirculated quality MS62 coins.

With the birth of the Type 2 $1 Gold Indian Princess Head, also known as the Small Head, in 1854, the Dollar coins were made larger in diameter and thinner. Designer James B. Longacre changed the portrait on the obverse of the Type 2 Gold Dollar to a feather headdress on a female, generally referred to as the Indian Princess Head or large-sized type (Type 2). The encircling 13 stars were removed and replaced by the inscription “United States of America”.

The Type 2 coin production only spanned three years before it was permanently retired to be replaced by the Type 3 Large Head Indian. This limited production run makes the Type 2 $1 Gold Indian among the most desired Type coin in U.S. coinage history.
