Gold Buffalo were the first .9999 fine (24 karat) gold coins made by the U.S. Mint. The minting of these coins has been commissioned to the United States Mint at West Point, and they have done a spectacular job of producing the Proof versions of these American Gold Buffalo coins. By using a specialized minting process that begins by manually feeding burnished coin blanks into presses fitted with special dies, the coin is then struck multiple times so the softly-frosted, highly-detailed images seem to float above the field.
